This event is a joint competition between the ATP and the WTA, with both an ATP 1000 and a WTA 1000 tournament taking place at the same time.
Some tennis enthusiasts consider the Indian Wells Tennis Tournament to be the fifth grand slam because it is one of the major ATP tennis tournaments staged each year.
The Indian Wells Tennis Garden hosts the tournament on outdoor hard courts, with the largest stadium court holding 16,000 tennis fans.
The Miami Open traditionally follows the tournament in the latter two weeks of March."Sunshine Double" is the name for what happens when a player wins both tournaments.
The "sunshine double" has been accomplished by several athletes throughout the years, including Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, and Kim Clijsters.

The 2024 ATP and WTA Tournaments will take place over two weeks from the 6th to the 17th of March 2024, with qualifying taking place on the 4th and 5th of March.
If an ATP player loses in the first week at Indian Wells, he or she can compete in the Arizona Tennis Classic the following week.

The overall prize fund for 2024 will be announced before the start date of the event. In 2023 the tournament prize money was $17,600,000, an increase of 5.27% from the previous year.
Since 2012, the BNP Paribas Open has offered equal prize money for men and women competing in singles and doubles matches. This means that each tour competes for a portion of the $8,800,000 in total prize money.
The winner of the 2023 Indian Wells tournament will also get a check for $1,262,220 in addition to 1,000 ranking points and a significant addition to their trophy collection.
